Tumblr is great and all, and I love seeing those cute little critters that the Oatmeal drew, but if I have to deal with one more Tumblr shutdown I’ll shoot myself in the head…….with a gun sound effect app. Seriously though, you’ve failed me Tumblr. You failed all of us. Who would have though the genius behind LipDub and Pummelvision would ever let us down.

PartyBoy

I’ll forgive the gendered name of this app because I enjoy its utility, but PartyBoy is a surprisingly useful app that helps to sort out all those mystery numbers you pick up when you start getting slizzard and flirty. All this app really does is sequentially orders all the phone numbers you have put in your contacts in an effort to help you jog your memory when you’re wondering “Who the hell is Hans and when the hell did I get his number and is this the Hans I met on Friday or the Hans I met on Monday?” Of course this app doesn’t really help my most common problem, which is actually hearing people’s names and functionally typing them into my phone…so Polo Shirt, French Guy, Hottie, Darko or Douche, if you’re reading this, shoot me an email.

I have no tolerance for working out, I just can’t stand it and I’ll find any way I can around it. Right now these are my main outlets for physical activity: dancing, screwing and walking. I can at least use a pedometer to measure just how much of my margarita I burned off walking to the bar instead of ordering from the waitress, but how am I supposed to measure how much of those aphrodisiac oysters I’m burning off in the resulting sex. Enter eEmotion! Think of it like a sex pedometer. Just turn the app on, place it on the bed and it measures the number of thrusts, the vigorousness of said thrusts and approximately how many calories you burned in a session. I’ve yet to actually put this app into action but expect a full report when I do. Oh, and great companion app, Lose It, also counts sex as exercises and measures it by intensity and hours. You ladies keep your Zumba, I’ve got a whole new routine planned.

I’m the type of nasty girl who likes to Qrank in public with multiple people all at once.

No really, it isn’t as nasty as it sounds. If you haven’t yet started Qranking, it’s time to get to it. This Austin-based app has become a local favorite and the daily and live trivia app game is slowly being adopted by local businesses and news organizations as a way to bring audiences together.

Last week I got my Qrank on in public for the first time in a game hosted by the Austin American Statesman.

I noticed a row of 5 S’s accidentally formed on my screen one day and decided to see how many lettered apps I had. This scarcely scratches the surface. I’m in need of some more vowels though before I can start spelling anything.

A few weeks ago I saw this Making Future Magic video out of London and about wet myself with excitement. It took me a good couple minutes to even wrap my head around what exactly was happening in these amazing ghostly images, and even longer to understand exactly how it was pulled off. In short they used long exposure photos, 3D typography sectioned out and projected from iPhones and iPads and stop motion animation to make a video that is all at once high tech and low tech.

I’m not much of a maker so I put the idea in the back of my head but nearly wet myself all over again last week when I came across Holographium, an app that directly replicates the process and allows you to make your own 3D animated words. I’ve done a few brief tests so far, and I’ll be honest that as of yet I’ve not actually successfully produced a nice looking image but it’s a delicate balance of getting timing right to produce a quality frame. Since I don’t have a camera to execute this with, I’ve actually been using a good companion app called Light Graffiti, which has a built in camera capable of the long exposure.

I’ve been chatting with the developer behind Holographium and hope to be producing some instructional videos soon.

I’ve just started using the app Daily Mugshot to document my daily face, for better or worse. This app makes what Noah K. did seem slightly less impressive, and the accompanying website makes management of your images almost too easy. I’m really amassing a large collection of apps that require a daily task of me and have not yet taken the time to quantify how long I’m investing in them all. I have a feeling I don’t want to know.

Facebook Deals is a dealbreaker for me

This week the newest kid on the LBSN block, Facebook, introduced a game-changing new element with their Deals feature. I’ve been skeptical of Places, I’ve raged against using it, I’ve clung tight to my old familiar networks… but now I’m ready to get some payback

I’m not a dum dum, I learned the meaning of TNSTAAFL in elementary school. I fully realize that when I join a social network I am not the customer, I am the product with which they will be luring customers. This exchange is fine with me when the payoff is there. For example, I open Facebook to my life and in exchange I get an unparalleled connection with friends and I actually don’t even mind the hyper-targeted advertising.

But I’ve been using multiple location based social networks for more than a year now, primarily Gowalla and Foursquare, and the novelty of virtual gifts and badges have worn off and I’m looking for the real payoff. Participating in a LBSN isn’t any small feat; the effort it takes to have my device, remember to open it up, find the app, find the location or even create a NEW location, check into it, write a message, take a photo, leave tips…it’s a lot that’s being asked of me. Regardless of where the chips fall in all this, I’ll continue to use some form of LBSN just because I enjoy the element of diarizing, but the rest of America won’t unless some tangible rewards start showing up.

This is why Facebook’s newly announced Deals has thrown a wild card into my LBSN decision. The ease and targeting associated with Facebook ads has made creating focused online ad campaigns both cheaper and easier. If they bring this same sort of ease of use to Places and give local business a cheap easy way to participate in LBSN, I’m sold. And it will be a huge stumbling block for Foursquare and Gowalla.

So I’m a bit late on the Halloween posting, I was too busy stuffing my face full of tiny packs of nerds and figuring out how to de-slutify my slutoween costume for work, but I did want to catch up and thank one of my favorite apps, Miso, for their costume award. I’ve talked about Miso a lot in the past, it’s where I document all the TV shows and movies I watch, and the app held a Halloween contest for the best movie or TV themed costume. Now I took third behind far and away the WORST Joan Holloway I’ve ever seen (seriously sting bean, you were an insult to my Mad Men premiere Joan outfit) but I still stuck out as a foxy curvaciosu redhead. Look familiar anyone?

Halloween has become a big deal in the app store with apps like Doodle Jump and Angry Birds putting on spooky themes to draw in seasonally motivated players. But it appears the rest of the world actually responded by dressing as their favorite app characters. Naturally, it appears that the game more infectious than the common cold, Angry Birds, took the most number of fans:

But Halloween didn’t go to the birds entirely. There were also a few Plants vs. Zombies and Cooking Mamas.

As though his cute kids, gorgeous wife, fluffy dog, hip musical tastes and tolerant policies weren’t enough to make me love him, Barack H. Obama l ovingly signed an iPad for a fan, using the (Adobe Ideas) app. I think this is almost a better endorsement than becoming one of Apple’s featured apps.

Now if only there was an app to get lazy 20-somethings asses to the polls.

I’m celebrating the arrival of my sexy new Junko Mizuno iPhone 4 skin from Infectious designs by making up a little stop motion animation with my Junko Pure Trance vinyl toys using one of my new favorite apps, (StopMotion Recorder). I had to stop for a bit and decide how appropriate it was to walk around day to day with a phone skin featuring exposed breasts, but decided that in a world where phone balls exist, my phone’s bared boobies were just a drop in the bucket.

As for the app, I’ve always wanted to do stop motion and never really been able to pull together the equipment or technique to do so. This app however actually brings you an incredible suite for making animations which includes ghosted images to see how far you’ve moved, the ability to delete and replace frames and multiple export options including Youtube, Quicktime and yFrog. Plus it’s really good for making pens dance around your desk when you’re bored at the office.

Today Apple responded to the pleas of developers the world over with a tidy list of all the things that will get your app kicked to the curb. And man is it snarky. Here are the top five bitchiest statements in the newly released review guidelines.

1. “We have over 250,000 apps in the App Store. We don’t need any more Fart apps.”

2. “We have lots of serious developers who don’t want their quality Apps to be surrounded by amateur hour.”

3. “We will reject Apps for any content or behavior that we believe is over the line. What line, you ask? Well, as a Supreme Court Justice once said, ‘I’ll know it when I see it’ And we think that you will also know it when you cross it.”

4. “Apple and our customers place a high value on simple, refined, creative, well thought through interfaces. They take more work but are worth it. Apple sets a high bar. If your user interface is complex or less than very good, it may be rejected.”

Is Fart App The Movie going too far?

So they want to make a movie out of hit iPhone app game Angry Birds. You know what,I think this is just a great idea, I mean why not, in an age when movies like Cats vs. Dog and Piranha 3D can put butts in seats, I don’t see why we can’t make a full length feature film about birds fighting pigs. And after all, we know how well previous thinly-plotted video game movies have done. I mean look at the accolades that Mario Brothers Movie (Rotten Tomatoes rating 14%) drew, or what about the Academy nominations that Mark Wahlberg drew for Max Payne.

Hey, and why stop with Angry Birds?! Lady AppApp is ready to get in on this game and has been busy writing screenplays for some equally ludicrous app movies:

Lady AppApp may never acquire the singing chops of Lady GaGa but I’m pretty sure I could aim a little lower and be the next Ke$ha. I already love whiskey, I’m no stranger to waking up in weird places with smeared makeup, and I can’t sing to save my life. But thankfully Ke$ha and I are both blessed to live in a world that has auto tune, and with the app (LaDiDa) I can pretty much pop off a hit summer single that’s at least as good at Tik Tok.

Ever since I downloaded LaDiDa I pretty much make about 25 songs a day about everything from washing my hair to petting my cats. I made this one for Austin’s Big Ass Twitter Happy Hour and name dropped my tweeps. If you pay attention to what’s happening on the interwebs you may have caught wind of LaDiDa a while back when they auto tuned wolves and the internet basically declared it the only incident ever where auto tune actually made something sound better. This app makes quickly creating and sharing songs dangerously easy..I may cut an album by the end of the week. Maybe even the day.

Every other social network nowadays is offering badges. I can literally earn badges for everything from eating food to getting daily chores done. I suppose that’s why (Get Glue) tried to break from the pack and reward users with stickers. Because little round stickers are NOTHING like little round badges. But while Foursquare has only just given us the opportunity to start wearing our badges in the real world, Get Glue has apparently made it into one of their early marketing strategies. After putting a request on their site a few weeks ago, I just got this in the mail, I nice fat pack of all the stickers I’ve earned through the site. I’m considering sticking a few on each copy of my resume, you know, to really let them see some of my achievements.

The sticker thing is cool, but didn’t really get me too terribly juiced until I caught wind of these exclusive True Blood stickers. I’d stake a vamp or bang a fang to earn even a digital version of these.
